Wellesbourne Watermill

14th March, 1993

Our first visit of the year was to Wellesbourne Watermill on 14th March 1993. The watermill is an historic and beautifully restored watermill, which is one of three listed for Walton in the Domesday Book.
Although the present structure was built in 1834, property deeds still exist for an earlier mill dated 1198 and 1216.
Painstaking restoration enabled visitors to watch the magnificent 17 foot diameter breastshot wheel powered naturally by water from the mill pond. The wheel turns impressive wood and iron machinery which produces stoneground flour.
A guided tour was given of the working mill plus a chance to watch the highly acclaimed video of the mill’s history, workings and restoration. We were also given the chance to watch traditional craftsmen at work.
