Sunday, 21st July - Canal Walk
By kind invitation of the Midland branch of the Newcomen Society. Walk with guide to Salford Junction via Digbeth Branch (about 6.25 miles). After a refreshment stop at lunchtime, those fit and willing will return via Aston Locks (about 5.5 miles).
Sunday, 8th September - Castle ring et al. (cost: £4.50)
Mr Chris Welch, Archaeologist for Staffordshire County Council, will talk to us about the archaeology of Cannock Chase, and after a visit to the Iron-Age Hill-fort at Castle Ring, will lead a walk to the 15th Century ruins of Beaudesert House (entrance charge included).
Sunday, 6th October - Wall & Wroxeter
By kind invitation of Solihull Archaeological Group. Wall (Letocetum) was a major Roman staging point on Watling Street. A succession of Roman forts are under continuing investigation by Staffordshire Archaeological & Historical Society, and there is also a site and small museum in English Heritage guardsmanship. Recent work at Wroxeter has clarified the very wide extent of Roman settlement and fortifications associated with the pre-Roman Celtic tribal capital of the Cornovii and has found indications of 5th Century post-Roman use.
