Saturday 13th July - Outing to Madresfield Court (cost: Ł6.00 per person)
An excursion has been booked to Madresfield Court (gate at SO 803 477. This will be a guided tour of the house in parties of 15.
Madresfield Court is a couple of miles east of Great Malvern. It has been the home of the Lygon family since medieval times and is still occupied by members of the family. The house was extensively remodelled in the Victorian period and is well worth a visit.
Saturday 15th June - Castles of the Welsh Marches (cost: Ł6.00)
An outing to Whittington Castle (SJ 338 312), Sycarth (SJ 206 258) and Oswestry (). Whittington Castle has recently been the subject of detailed research by Peter Brown (who will guide us). The castle was built following the destruction of its predecessor as the residence of a marcher lord. Evidence has recently been found of a medieval garden in the outer bailey with a viewing mount, which is 200 years earlier than any other known. The fortifications round the outer bailey may be prehistoric.
After lunch we will visit Sycarth, a much smaller motte and bailey, which was the home of Owen Glendower. we will then return to Oswestry where we will have a guided walk to show us medieval Oswestry
