Halesowen Abbey - Wall of Abbey Church, March 1996 Excursions are arranged to places of archaeological or historical interest in the Midlands and further afield. The main excursion each year is a whole day visit in the summer. Previous destinations have included Wellesbourne Watermill, Shugborough Hall, prehistoric copper mines in North Wales, the Roman town of Silchester, Harvington Hall, Bristol Docks, Bredon Hil, and more recently St Mary's Cathedral and Priory in Coventry.

Visits are also arranged to local sites, usually including a guided tour. Notable examples have been visits to Sutton Park, the newly renovated canals of Birmingham City centre, Castle Ring and the Birmingham University field Archaeology Unit.

A significant new activity, which has proved popular, is offered by the Saturday morning hands-on sessions in the Birmingham Museum, where we are able to handle and examine artefacts related to a particular theme, with background and context provided by one of the curators. Past subjects have included Ancient Egypt, medieval Birmingham, money, ancient writing and pre-Columbian America.

The Society actively encourages members of other related societies to join in our visits and to open theirs to our members; we have been invited to attend visits organised by the Newcomen Society and the Solihull Archaeological Group.
