Although the Society does not conduct its own excavations in what is predominantly a professional environment we do run a Field Group, which also participates in excavations run by other organisations in the area.
We do, however, conduct our own non-excavation based surveys, for example between 1986 and 1989 the Field Group conducted a landscape survey of the parish of Barston, near Solihull. Field Group members have also assisted in various other projects in the area, including an archaeological assessment of medieval churches in the Diocese of Birmingham and excavations at Metchley Roman fort.
Previous work also includes surveys of Lifford Hall in King's Norton, and the Rea Valley.
Our Field Group is currently conducting an extensive archaeological landscape survey in the Sutton Coldfield area, involving fieldwalking, earthwork recording, and building recording. We are hoping to expand the survey to include aerial photography and geophysical survey
This survey was the subject of an article in the Birmingham regional newspaper Metronews.
Bronze Age Burnt Mounds have long been a feature of Birmingham archaeology, where they aoccur concentrated along many of the smaller streams. The Society revived the West Midlands Burnt Mounds Survey in 2002 to systematically examine stream banks in south Birmingham, to assess the full distribution of these sites.
